The second Marine City Art Drift saw a crowd of people drifting through local businesses on April 27.
The Marine City Art Drift is a citywide art exhibition showcasing artists and Marine City businesses. The event offers people the opportunity to explore local businesses as they partner with Michigan artists for the day. Attendees had a chance to wander from business to business to discover artists displaying their works for sale and offering live demonstrations.
During the event, attendees received a map to collect stamps from participating artists. Once they gathered all the stamps, they could submit it for a chance to win the Marine City Art Drift gift basket filled with art and products from local businesses.
The first Marine City Art Drift took place in September of 2023.“Last year my business, New Century Art Gallery, received a $5,000 grant through Main Street America and American Express,” New Century Art Gallery gallerist and artist Jeanne Burris-Johnson said. “With Jessica Blakely, owner of MC Marketplace and Rose Gottler, owner of The Painted Toad, we put on our first Marine City Art Drift...

Over the span of 8 months, these talented individuals have undergone comprehensive training in various aspects of the art industry to equip them for the professional sphere. Their curriculum covered essential topics such as crafting biographies and artist statements, determining artwork pricing, emphasizing the significance of finishing techniques, and more. During this time, they dedicated themselves to creating the art that will be featured in their first professional exhibition.

New Century Art Gallery asked artist Mike Henry, " Who are some contemporaries or figures in art history who have influenced you?
"I, like many artists, have contemporaries that I follow, and have had an impact on my life and work. Most of these artists I have followed from a distance, and one I have had the good fortune of following up close.
One that I'll mention first is John Lovett. As a brand new watercolor painter I found his book: "Watercolor for the Fun of It - Getting Started." The cover caught my attention, and after quickly perusing the book, I took it home and it became my introduction to watercolor. He is a master at orchestrating soft, loose areas and tight, realistic areas on the picture plane. It would be 15 years after I started painting that I would meet him and attend one of his workshops. This soft-speaking Australian painter has a teacher's heart and showed me that this business of painting can be "fun" and reminded me that there always possibilities beyond what I see on my present painting.
Speaking of possibilities, I am writing this from the home of Stephen Quiller. In the early 2000's, I purchased his book: "The Painter's Guide To Color," because I wanted to learn more about color. A few years later I would take a workshop from him, and he asked me if I would be interested in working as his assistant for his August workshops in Creede, Colorado. That was over 15 years ago, and has given me the privilege of being an eyewitness to over 30 Quiller workshops, plus a lot of one-on-one time with Steve.
The lessons from spending time with a living master are endless. I am now very interested in the subtle nuances of color and how to use them. I have become a "noticer" of those shifts in nature, and choose to push them when I'm in my studio, when necessary. I have always loved using a limited palette, but with my time spent with Steve, and viewing his paintings over the years, I am pushing past the "limits" that I thought I had."

We are excited to announce that New Century Art Gallery in Marine City has received a $25,000 Enhancement Grant from the Backing Small Businesses program presented by @AmericanExpress, in partnership with @Main Street America. We were among the 350 Backing Small Businesses grantees awarded $5,000 earlier this year, and now have been selected among 25 of the original grantees for an additional enhancement grant that will help us address cultural, environmental, or access needs in our community. We are so excited to be among the recipients of this program!
For New Century Art Gallery, this grant will help us continue to build our business and create opportunities for artists in the St Clair County area. Some of the many plans we have include adding to our classes, continuing community programs like our Veteran’s classes or talks, having another Marine City Art Drift, and working with other businesses and the City of Marine City to build more opportunity for our art community.
