Welcome to the New Century Art Gallery 2023/24 Artist Mentorship page. Here you can follow the progress of this year's selected artists and learn more about our program.
Over 8 months 4 students will meet once a month with Jeanne Burris Johnson, Gallerist of New Century Art Gallery to plan an exhibit while learning about the business of art. At the end of the program, students will have a basic understanding of the art business and participate in a professional exhibition that they can add to their resume.
The goal of this program is to provide teens interested in pursuing art with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the art world. During this program students will:
• Prepare a plan for an exhibition and create the works to be shown.
• Every month learn and apply a new aspect of the business of art such as:
…How to plan your time so that you get your exhibition put together on time.
…How to price artwork and add gallery commissions properly.
…Why finish work can make the difference between making a sale and clients walking away.
…How to approach an art gallery that you want to show your art in.
…The importance of promoting your work.
… Putting together an artist biography and artist statement.
…Best practices for keeping inventory and bookkeeping.
…How to find “Calls for Art” and enter them.
…Putting together a press release.
…and much more
Students will each receive a $100 stipend to help cover the cost of art supplies.

For the longest time, I have been considered the family's artist. This is mainly because my grandfather always awaits the next artwork I create and then shows it off to his friends and other relatives. I am extremely grateful for this because it shows how accepting and encouraging my family has been in me pursuing art; especially since I started self-taught.
I believe an artist’s work reflects their experiences and progression in life. As a young artist, my paintings mainly demonstrate how my skill level has improved over the years. I have always had a passion for drawing. Since reaching Middle School. I realized I wanted to pursue it as a career. Following this time, I have pushed myself to use the best of my abilities! In doing so my pieces have placed both “Best of Show” in the 2022 St. Clair Art Association Art Show and “Second Place” in the 2023 St. Clair Art Association Art Show. Furthermore, I am extremely grateful to have placed “Third Place in Painting” in the 2023 Congressional Art Competition. I credit my pieces to enjoying the process of making them because I believe the passion you put into your work along the way is clearly shown as a result.

Livia Kuecken’s childhood, still being lived out, is planted in Michigan, where she finds inspiration in everyday scenes and perspectives. Always urged on by her family, especially her Grandpa, she has always enjoyed artistry.
Although no professional appearance in art exists, marketing at vendors among the community has provided a small experience in the business aspect of painting, and the awareness that someone liking a piece enough to purchase it brings great joy.
Always with her nose in a book, learning and knowledge is what chiefly influences her mind. Her paintings expose this with the clean lines and soft colors of watercolor and ink pens. Architecture, animals, shoes-Livia has dabbled much, constantly attempting to find her favorite thing to paint and draw, often with trial and plenty of error. One of her favorite exercises is taking a color scheme from nature, colors the Heavenly Father has curated, and applying them to her works.
Achievements include minor art ventures, such as designing the yearbook cover for her co-op for a third year straight, taking on a commission, and being elected to the Young Artist Mentorship program of the New Century Art Gallery. While still growing in art, her future plans are undecided, yet she will always strive to accomplish any task to the highest esteem. Whether running cross-country, typing books, or painting, Livia Kuecken seeks to express herself in whatever she does.

I am the result of an abnormal childhood, so I’m incredibly proud of where I am now. I have loved art all my life, and I haven’t stopped making it since I picked up a crayon. I’ve never wanted to draw princesses, ponies, and flowers like other kids. Instead, I was interested in making odd, gory monsters…and frogs. I adored frogs with a passion.
I have dealt with quite a few hardships in my childhood, which I believe helped shape who I am today. Although there have been some rough patches in my life, they have only fueled me to push harder in the future. Thankfully, in my most recent time, everything has gone quite well.
For many years, I have enjoyed bringing up solemn topics in my art in a fun and interesting way. Breaking down scary and harsh subjects into satirical, digestible media. I have also enjoyed simply expressing myself through my art and having fun. It’s the greatest feeling for me to goof around and then have a wonderful art piece when I’m done.
My art has changed and developed alongside me; it is my friend, my companion, and my passion. It is as fluid as I am. I hope that it is as enjoyable to my audience as it is to me.

My name is Heather Segura and im a senior attending Marine City High School. Youngest of three and born to a loving yet mildly dysfunctional family, I was unfortuately named the household “golden child”. But being the weird, quiet kid at school that not many people talked to, I occupied most of my time sitting by myself with a sketchbook and pencil. I naturally became labeled one of the “artsy kids” in elementary school, and by middle and high school, I was recogized as one of top artists in my grade, even recently nominated “next picasso” in my senior class mock Oscar awards.
Since childhood, I’ve always been considered a very creative mind, almost too creative, as I’m told I tend to over think things. I’m observant, analytical, and a bit of a perfectionist; it’s my greatest strength and weakess. But that mindset gets me ahead of the game, for when you strive for understanding and a personal sense of perfection, you discipline yourself, and your skills and abilities become all the more better. I‘ve, at this point, become relatively academically and artistically above average, and I humbly relish in that fact. Though I only really live in my head, I love to share what goes on in there, so I’ve turned to expressing myself visually through art, though storytelling is clearly one of my many fortes.
My plans after high school include attending College for Creative Studies in Detroit and majoring in concept art. I want to work in a studio, work my way up a studio, becuase my big dream is to one day either become a creative director or even start a production company of my own.
Local reporter for the Keel, Andrea Harrington did a wonderful article about the 2022/23 mentees!
