New Century Art Gallery asked artist Jenny Walker, “Which work has taken you the longest to complete?”
"The Train Depot. The painting took a year to finish, I did research on it which sometimes was difficult because of the time period. I spent a lot of time on what type of trains to put in and what the people should be doing. The reason why I painted it was there no image honoring the train station which was an important type of travel in that time period and Port Huron seemed to have forgotten."-Jenny Walker

Every month the New Century Art Gallery/River Rec Teen Zone Artist Mentorship program meets, and we will report on their progress regularly. In addition to posting on social media, New Century has created a website page for the mentees to apply the skills they learn in the program.
Last month the artists learned about the importance of promoting yourself and your art. Each artist created both a long and short version of an artist statement and a biography. Over the next couple of weeks, we will be posting the short version of each artist’s statement. An artist statement introduces the artist and explains why and how you make your art. To read their long biographies, follow the link at the end of the post.

Art can be an escape from reality at times, especially when reality isn’t all that great. I
have used drawing as a way to keep myself going, even when things were tough. The small
details of my often realistic pieces give me something else to focus on. Experimenting with new mediums and new ways of making art is something that I find quite enjoyable. Out of all the mediums and things that I have used, colored pencils seem to allow me to make my best work. I also like painting with acrylics very much. Realistic portraits are my favorite thing to create. The different structures of faces and the way light hits it is fascinating to me. Over the years I have grown very much as an artist. I went from being quite indifferent towards it to absolutely adoring it. Art can be used to convey thoughts, emotions, and ideas that words just can’t do justice to.
